The rally in Paytm shares was also fuelled by reports that the digital payments company is expanding into a new artificial intelligence (AI) business to boost revenue growth.
Media reports said Paytm is expanding into agentic AI through a new offering called Paytm Intelligence, or Pi. The company plans to sell AI agents to enterprise customers that can handle tasks across sales, customer service and operations. The initial target market includes banks, smaller lenders, insurers and other financial institutions in India and the UAE.
Paytm has reportedly been developing a financial-services AI model for about two years, using financial and customer-behaviour data to build capabilities in areas such as fraud detection, credit assessment and claims analysis.
Separately, some reports said AI agents could soon be allowed to make UPI payments on behalf of users under a proposed framework with safeguards around consent, authentication and transaction limits. This could create a new interface between AI assistants and India's digital payments ecosystem.
There is also a broader positive backdrop around the stock. A foreign broker recently raised its Paytm target price to Rs 2,200 from Rs 1,500, citing potential upside from a possible UPI merchant discount rate and improving business prospects.
The digital payments and financial services company reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 220 crore in Q1 FY27, up 78.86% YoY and 20.22% QoQ. Revenue from operations rose 27.63% YoY and 8.13% QoQ to Rs 2,448 crore in the quarter ended 30 June 2026. EBITDA surged 181.94% YoY and 53.79% QoQ to Rs 203 crore, while EBITDA margin expanded to 8% from 4% in Q1 FY26 and 6% in Q4 FY26.
One 97 Communications operates Paytm, a digital payments and financial services platform offering merchant payments, financial services distribution, lending, insurance and wealth management products.
The transaction came after One 97 Communications on Monday said that Resilient Asset Management B.V., an entity associated with Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma, proposed to sell up to 4.98% of its stake in the company through a block market trade.
The proposed sale is under Resilient's existing Optionally Convertible Debenture (OCD) agreement with Antfin (Netherlands) Holding B.V. The economic value received by Resilient from the sale will be retained by Antfin under the agreement.
Resilient had acquired an approximately 10.20% stake in One 97 Communications from Antfin in 2023 against OCDs issued to Antfin. Although the shares were held by Resilient, the economic interest continued to belong to Antfin.
As of June 2026, Resilient held a 10.20% stake in One 97 Communications, while founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma held a 9.03% direct stake. The proposed sale of up to 4.98% would represent nearly half of Resilient's holding.
The company clarified that it is not a party to the transaction and that there will be no change in Sharma's direct shareholding.
The reports said the transaction was valued at around Rs 2,002 crore, with the floor price fixed at Rs 1,339.65 per share, representing a 5% discount to Paytm's previous closing price.
Shareholding data for the quarter ended 30 June 2026 showed that Saif Partners India IV held a 3.63% stake in Paytm, while Saif III Mauritius Company held 8.55%. Elevation Capital's holding was below the 1% disclosure threshold.
According to the reports, the selling shareholders will be subject to a 60-day lock-up period, restricting any further stake sales during the period, subject to customary exceptions.
Paytm (One 97 Communications) has launched Paytm Split Bills on the Paytm app this Friendship Day. Designed for friend groups, college students, Gen Z and young professionals, it helps manage shared spending across road trips, birthday celebrations, weekend brunches, movie nights, online food orders, shopping and other group plans.
Friends can create a group, add each expense and choose whether to divide it equally, by exact amount, shares or percentage. The group summary shows the total amount spent, each person's share, pending balances, amounts to pay or receive and recent activity. Payment reminders can be sent directly from the Paytm app, while dues can be settled through Paytm UPI with the amount and recipient details already filled in.
Paytm Split Bills offers unlimited expense entries at no cost, without entry limits, paid upgrades or additional charges. Expenses paid through Paytm UPI, other payment apps, cash, cards or any other method can be recorded in the same group, keeping the complete shared expense history together. Payments settled separately can also be marked as received.

Profit before tax stood at Rs 220 crore in Q1 FY27, up 58.27% YoY and 35.80% QoQ.
EBITDA surged 181.94% YoY and 53.79% QoQ to Rs 203 crore, while EBITDA margin expanded to 8% from 4% in Q1 FY26 and 6% in Q4 FY26.
On the cost front, total direct expenses increased 43% YoY and 8.71% QoQ to Rs 1,098 crore, led by a 37% YoY increase in payment processing charges to Rs 794 crore and a 143% YoY rise in promotional cashback and incentives to Rs 90 crore. Indirect expenses rose 6% YoY to Rs 1,147 crore. Employee costs increased 15% YoY to Rs 742 crore, while marketing expenses rose 27% YoY to Rs 79 crore. Software, cloud and data centre expenses declined 5% YoY to Rs 159 crore. Finance costs increased 75% YoY to Rs 7 crore, while depreciation and amortisation expenses fell 21% YoY to Rs 131 crore.
Payment Services revenue increased 33% YoY to Rs 1,384 crore, while Distribution of Financial Services revenue rose 45% YoY to Rs 814 crore. Marketing Services revenue declined 3% YoY to Rs 239 crore.
Operationally, gross merchandise value (GMV) increased 31% YoY to Rs 7.1 lakh crore. Merchant transactions rose 28% YoY to 1,669 crore, while total transactions increased 36% YoY to 1,989 crore. The number of registered merchants grew 12% YoY to 5 crore, subscription merchants increased 21% YoY to 1.57 crore, and key financial services customers rose 34% YoY to 7.6 lakh. The average number of sales employees increased 12% YoY to 43,715.
Looking ahead, the company said AI-led operating leverage, accelerating revenue growth and expanding EBITDA margins position it for long-term sustainable profit growth. It reiterated that it has better visibility to achieve its previously indicated 15-20% EBITDA margin over the next two to three years, supported by faster top-line growth and AI-driven efficiencies.
Paytm Europe Payments S.A (Paytm Europe), a step down wholly owned subsidiary of One 97 Communications, has been informed by Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier, Luxembourg (CSSF) on 02 July 2026 that it has been granted the payment institution licence and also been registered on the payment institutions official list, with effect from 02 July 2026.
The licence has been granted in relation to the provision of services namely:
(a) execution of payment transactions, including transfers of funds on a payment account with the user's payment service provider or with another payment service provider: - execution of credit transfers, including standing orders;
(b) execution of payment transactions where the funds are covered by a credit line for a payment service user: - execution of credit transfers, including standing orders; and
(c) acquiring of payment transactions.
